30km/h in the central city from July

From the end of July speed limits on most central city streets will change from 50km to 30km - making our central city more more pleasant and appealing for everyone, especially for people walking and riding bikes.

The final decision was made unanimously by Councillors at Wellington City Council on Thursday. It was the final step (until the new signs go up!) for our project that started with your feedback in late 2019. A big thanks to everyone who had their say.

Thorndon Quay and Hutt Road

We've already received 340 comments telling us how Thorndon Quay and Hutt Road could be improved. If you're one of the thousands of people who use Thorndon Quay and Hutt Road, and you haven't already commented, we'd like to hear from you.

Thorndon Quay and Hutt Road is the busiest bus route outside of the city centre, and the busiest route in the city for people biking to and from work. We want to make travelling by bus a faster and more reliable choice for people travelling to and through the city, as well as provide a safer environment for people walking and on bikes.

The project team is considering options for road layout, how to best manage conflicts between buses, bikes and pedestrians, and how to improve the safety of all road users in areas with angle parking. We also need to ensure any changes are workable for the businesses, retailers and residents in this area.  These roads are also the access route for the ferry terminal and port which means what we propose needs to work for freight trucks too.

We'll use the feedback to help us develop the options that we'll seek your views on later in July.

If you haven't already, go online to find out more and tell us what improvements you'd like to see at https://lgwm.nz/thorndon-quay-and-hutt-road/. Feedback closes on Monday 15 June.
